When I stumbled across a book of antique Tarot cards, a 17th-century Italian deck instantly captured my imagination and inspired me to recreate the image in steel. I wanted each piece to feel like a deck long forgotten, tucked away in the dusty basement of an old curiosity shop, only to be rediscovered centuries later.
To achieve this timeworn look, we layer techniques—painting, sanding, scuffing, rusting and buffing—to give the metal sheets a rich patina, as though they’ve traveled through history. Each card becomes a magical, symbolic image, echoing the centuries-old tradition of divination. Using acrylic paints, gels, and rusting patina, no two pieces are ever quite the same, each taking on its own character as it comes to life in the studio.
While several coats of UV protectant clear-coat and buffing wax is applied, indoor use is recommended.
About La Morte (Death)
Often misunderstood, Death signifies not a literal end but a profound transformation—a turning point where what has outlived its purpose is released to make way for renewal. In this imagery, a skeletal figure moves through a field scattered with bones, the air heavy with the late summer feel of endings and harvest. It is a season where the old is gathered up, making space for what is yet to bloom. Shadows mingle with the promise of light, reminding us that decay nourishes new life, and every conclusion carries within it the seed of a beginning.
